BBL stands for Brazilian Butt Lift, a cosmetic surgery procedure that transfers fat from one area of the body to the buttocks to create a rounder, fuller, and more lifted appearance. Unlike buttock implants, a BBL uses the patient's own natural fat, which means there is no foreign material involved and results feel completely natural.
How Does a BBL Work?
A BBL is performed in two main stages. First, the surgeon performs liposuction on donor areas, typically the abdomen, flanks, lower back, or thighs, to harvest fat. The harvested fat is then purified and processed to separate viable fat cells from fluids and damaged tissue. In the second stage, the purified fat is carefully injected into multiple layers of the buttocks at specific locations to achieve the desired shape and projection.
What Results Can You Expect From a BBL?
A well-performed BBL can achieve several aesthetic improvements simultaneously:
- Increased fullness and projection in the buttocks
- A more defined waist-to-hip ratio and hourglass silhouette
- Slimmer donor areas (abdomen, flanks, back) from liposuction
- Smoother, more proportionate overall body contour
- Natural-looking and natural-feeling results using your own tissue
Not all transferred fat survives, patients can expect to retain approximately 60 to 80% of the transferred volume over time.
How Is a BBL Different From Butt Implants?
Buttock implants use silicone prosthetics to add volume, while a BBL uses the patient's own fat. BBL results tend to look and feel more natural, and there is no risk of implant-related complications. However, BBL requires sufficient donor fat, which means very thin patients may not have enough fat available to achieve meaningful augmentation. In those cases, implants may be recommended or a hybrid approach using both implants and fat grafting may be considered.
Is a BBL Safe?
When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited facility using modern safety protocols, including ultrasound guidance to place fat above the muscle, a BBL is safe. The procedure has become significantly safer as the industry has adopted subcutaneous fat placement techniques that dramatically reduce the risk of fat embolism. At Svelta Plastic Surgery in Miami, our surgeons follow the latest safety guidelines for every BBL procedure.
