How Long Does Plastic Surgery Last? Procedure-by-Procedure Guide

Understanding the longevity of your results is key to setting the right expectations.

One of the most common questions patients ask before undergoing cosmetic surgery is how long the results will last. The answer depends on the procedure, the patient's lifestyle, natural aging, and whether maintenance procedures are performed over time.

Liposuction and Lipo 360

Liposuction results can be considered permanent in the sense that the fat cells removed do not grow back. However, remaining fat cells can still enlarge with significant weight gain, which can alter the results. Patients who maintain a stable weight after liposuction typically enjoy long-lasting, even lifelong results from their procedure.

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)

BBL results are generally long-lasting, though some fat absorption is expected in the months following surgery, typically 20 to 40% of the transferred fat is reabsorbed. The fat cells that survive the transfer and establish a blood supply become permanent. Significant weight loss after a BBL can reduce the volume of the buttocks, while weight gain can increase it.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck provides long-lasting results, particularly for the muscle repair component, which is essentially permanent. The skin tightening is durable as long as the patient avoids major weight fluctuations and future pregnancies. Patients who become pregnant after a tummy tuck may need a revision procedure.

Breast Augmentation

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Silicone and saline implants typically last 10 to 20 years, though many patients go longer without needing replacement. The FDA recommends that patients with silicone implants get an MRI screening every 2 to 3 years to check for silent rupture. Implant exchange is common and straightforward when needed. Key factors that affect longevity include:

  • Implant type and manufacturer
  • Placement (submuscular implants tend to maintain their position better over time)
  • Weight changes and pregnancy
  • Development of capsular contracture
