Gummy bear implants, officially called form-stable or highly cohesive silicone gel implants, are the most durable type of breast implant currently available. Unlike traditional silicone gel implants, gummy bear implants maintain their shape even if the outer shell is compromised, because the internal silicone is cross-linked into a semi-solid form that does not flow freely.
Expected Lifespan of Gummy Bear Implants
Most gummy bear implants are expected to last 10 to 20 years or longer. Many patients go well beyond 20 years without needing replacement. However, breast implants are not guaranteed for life, and the FDA recommends regular monitoring regardless of implant type. The actual lifespan of any implant depends on individual factors including:
- The manufacturer and specific implant model
- Whether the implant is placed above or below the muscle
- Significant weight fluctuations or pregnancy after surgery
- Development of capsular contracture or other complications
- Individual biological response to the implant
Do Gummy Bear Implants Need to Be Replaced?
Unlike traditional silicone implants, gummy bear implants do not require routine replacement on a set schedule. They should be replaced if a rupture is detected, capsular contracture develops and does not resolve with treatment, the patient is unhappy with a change in shape or position, or if the patient desires a size or style change. The FDA recommends breast ultrasound or MRI screening every 5 to 6 years after the initial 3-year post-implant screening for silicone implants.
What Happens if a Gummy Bear Implant Ruptures?
One of the major advantages of gummy bear implants is that if the shell ruptures, the cohesive gel does not migrate to surrounding tissues the way liquid silicone might. The implant may retain most of its shape, making rupture harder to detect, which is why regular imaging screenings are recommended. Signs of rupture may include changes in breast shape, firmness, or the appearance of asymmetry. Surgical removal and replacement is the recommended treatment for a ruptured implant.
Are Gummy Bear Implants Worth Choosing?
For many patients, the durability, shape stability, and natural feel of gummy bear implants make them an excellent choice. They are particularly well-suited for patients seeking a more defined or tear-drop shaped breast contour, for patients with thinner skin or less natural breast tissue, and for anyone prioritizing longevity in their implant choice.
