How Long After Breast Augmentation Can You Swim?

Knowing when it is safe to return to the water after breast augmentation surgery protects your results and prevents serious complications.

After breast augmentation surgery, your incisions need to fully heal before being exposed to water, especially bodies of water that carry bacteria. Submerging too soon can introduce infection, cause incision separation, or compromise your implant results. Following your surgeon's guidance on water exposure is one of the most important parts of your recovery protocol.

Why Water Exposure Is Dangerous Early in Recovery

During the first few weeks after surgery, incisions are still closing and the risk of infection is highest. Even after the surface skin appears healed, deeper tissue layers may still be vulnerable. Pools, hot tubs, lakes, and the ocean all harbor bacteria that can enter through incisions that are not fully sealed. Beyond infection risk, prolonged water immersion can also soften and weaken sutures, leading to incision separation.

The Timeline for Returning to Water

  • Showering: Usually allowed 48–72 hours after surgery; keep incisions dry and do not let water stream directly on them
  • Bathing (soaking in a tub): Not recommended for at least 4–6 weeks
  • Swimming pools: Most surgeons recommend waiting a minimum of 6 weeks, with full incision closure confirmed
  • Ocean swimming: Wait at least 6–8 weeks; the ocean carries higher bacterial loads than pools
  • Hot tubs and jacuzzis: Wait at least 6–8 weeks; heat and bacteria in hot tubs present elevated risks

Signs Your Incisions Are Ready for Water

Before returning to swimming, have your surgeon confirm at a follow-up visit that your incisions are fully closed and healed. Signs of readiness include: no open areas or scabbing along the incision line, no discharge, no redness or warmth, and no pulling or tension in the tissue. Your surgeon may also assess whether scar tissue has matured sufficiently before clearing you for pool or ocean activity.

Tips for a Safe Return to Swimming

  • Get explicit clearance from your surgeon, do not self-assess readiness
  • Apply waterproof bandages to incision sites for extra protection during the first few pool visits
  • Avoid submerging the chest in contaminated or heavily chlorinated water right after clearance, ease in gradually
  • Rinse incisions with clean water and pat dry after swimming
  • Continue to avoid strenuous swimming strokes that stress the pectoral muscles for at least 8–10 weeks total
