BBL Bruising: What Is Normal After a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Bruising is a predictable part of BBL recovery, but understanding what to expect helps you know when to call your surgeon.

A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) involves two stages, liposuction to harvest fat from donor areas, and fat injection into the buttocks. Both stages involve significant tissue manipulation, which means bruising in multiple body regions is virtually guaranteed. Knowing what is normal and what warrants concern makes the recovery process far less stressful.

Where Bruising Appears After a BBL

Because a BBL harvests fat from multiple areas of the body, bruising commonly appears across a wide zone:

  • Abdomen and flanks (liposuction donor sites)
  • Lower back and waist
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Upper buttocks (injection sites)
  • Along any compression garment edge lines

What Normal BBL Bruising Looks Like

In the first 48–72 hours after surgery, bruising typically appears dark purple or blue-black. Over the following 7–14 days, it transitions through green and yellow hues as the body reabsorbs the blood pooling beneath the skin. Most bruising resolves completely within 3–4 weeks. Swelling accompanying the bruising is also normal and may take 6–8 weeks to substantially diminish.

Warning Signs That Are Not Normal

While bruising itself is expected, these signs warrant immediate contact with your surgeon:

  • Rapidly expanding bruising or hematoma (firm, painful swelling filled with blood)
  • Bruising accompanied by fever above 101°F (38.3°C)
  • Skin that becomes hard, very hot, or blackens beyond the normal bruise color
  • Shortness of breath, chest pain, or leg swelling (possible signs of a blood clot)
  • Foul-smelling discharge from any incision or injection site

How to Minimize Bruising During Recovery

Your surgeon will provide specific post-operative instructions, but these general strategies help reduce bruising severity and duration:

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil), stop these before surgery as directed
  • Apply arnica gel topically to bruised areas (check with your surgeon first)
  • Keep the body elevated where possible and avoid strenuous activity
  • Stay well hydrated to support lymphatic drainage
  • Attend all scheduled lymphatic massage sessions, which significantly accelerate bruise clearance
